The Hoofers and Heifers is Frying Pan's very own 4-H livestock club. The only livestock club in Fairfax County, Hoofers and Heifers works with the park animals at Kidwell Farm. Throughout the year, members learn about sheep, cattle, goats, swine, and poultry. The club focuses on basic animal science, livestock showmanship, and leadership. Members participate in a variety of club and park sponsored events, county and state 4-H competitions, and livestock shows like the annual 4-H Fair.
This year, Hoofers and Heifers has been receiving more and more members. We are always looking for more people to come learn about our club and discover the different parts of owning and showing livestock. Hoofers and Heifers has done amazing things for our community as well. We donated a LOT of canned food to a canned food bank, which helped feed many people. The club is very devoted to helping other people and animals. We have summer chore shifts to help out at Frying Pan Farm Park. Our club members sign up for shifts and members come in the morning from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and help with feeding the animals and cleaning the aisles and stalls.
Special guest speakers have come to our recent meetings. When club members want to have a guest speaker come to a meeting, they do all of the planning and coordination. This process teaches responsibility, management, and self-reliance. Recently, we have had two veterinarians come out to discuss their jobs with us. One of them took ultrasounds of Frying Pan Park’s two pregnant pigs and one pregnant cow. Our members enjoyed seeing the babies and learning how veterinarians take ultrasounds on different types of animals. Another veterinarian talked to us about what it takes to own different breeds of animals. Our club had a lot of questions for her and she was very nice and answered them all.
