Herndon Horse 4-H Club

Cloverbuds take Pony Rides.

Herndon Horse members go on a trail ride.
4-H Herndon Horse Club held two meetings this quarter and had a fun filled club event. In our first meeting, we did horsey crafts.  Because we have so many members (26), we split our meeting into two sessions with Cloverbuds coming earlier to work on horse bookmarks and Juniors and Seniors coming later to create 3-D paper horses.   The two groups came together to finalize plans for our trail ride. The next month, 18 of our club members went horseback riding.  The older members went trail riding while the younger members had pony rides in the ring.  We spent the morning enjoying the horses and having breakfast together.  A fun time was had by all!

Stephanie Sorensen

Club members make origami.

At our last meeting, members came together to make some horsey origami.  Then Mrs. Stephenson gave us a slide show of pictures from all the events we had done all year together.  It was a lot of fun seeing all that we had accomplished as a club.  We talked about upcoming 4-H events, club officer elections for next year and portfolios.  Mrs. Stephenson gave the Juniors a 4-H horse project to work on over the summer and then every member was awarded a 4-H Herndon Horse Particpation Certificate, horse stickers and a miniature horse.  We said goodbye to Stephanie Sorensen, our senior who graduated this year. Good luck, Stephanie!

We had two members attend 4-H congress this year: Rachel Stephenson and Caitlin Embly.  They both had a great time at congress and Rachel was elected as the 4-H Northern District Amabassador.  Congratulations, Rachel!

4-H Northern District Match

Fairfax Rabbit and Cavy 4-H Club

Fairfax Rabbit and Cavy Club members have been having fun with their pets.  They have had several pet play dates in addition to regular business meetings.  The new club shirts were distributed at the May meeting.
On June 2nd, club members brought their pets to Flint Hill School’s Community day.  Families enjoyed petting the animals and asking questions about pet care.  On June 24th, Club President Talia Adler supplied pets for a petting zoo at a birthday party.  At the June meeting, members worked on a scrapbook containing photos from events throughout the year.  The scrapbook will be on display at the 4-H Fair.

Hampton Horsefeathers 4-H Club

Hampton Horsefeathers has been very busy lately.  In March, Allisa Coles and Katherine  Ellig (shown in photo) competed in a mounted games show hosted by the Lucky Bits and Spurs 4-H Horse Club.  In May, Kate Fisher presented her science fair project to the club at a meeting.  The project was about horses’ favorite flavors.
Hampton Horsefeathers has been hard at work preparing for the 4-H Fair.  Hoping to attract more riders, they have decided to make this year’s show an open show.  They have chosen superintendents to make patterns for the horse show.  They will make stall cards for the Fair at the July meeting.  Also, Katherine Ellig was chosen as 4-H Fair Queen.

Hoofers and Heifers July 2012

The Hoofers and Heifers is Frying Pan's very own 4-H livestock club. The only livestock club in Fairfax County, Hoofers and Heifers works with the park animals at Kidwell Farm. Throughout the year, members learn about sheep, cattle, goats, swine, and poultry. The club focuses on basic animal science, livestock showmanship, and leadership. Members participate in a variety of club and park sponsored events, county and state 4-H competitions, and livestock shows like the annual 4-H Fair.

This year, Hoofers and Heifers has been receiving more and more members. We are always looking for more people to come learn about our club and discover the different parts of owning and showing livestock. Hoofers and Heifers has done amazing things for our community as well. We donated a LOT of canned food to a canned food bank, which helped feed many people. The club is very devoted to helping other people and animals. We have summer chore shifts to help out at Frying Pan Farm Park. Our club members sign up for shifts and members come in the morning from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and help with feeding the animals and cleaning the aisles and stalls.

Special guest speakers have come to our recent meetings. When club members want to have a guest speaker come to a meeting, they do all of the planning and coordination. This process teaches responsibility, management, and self-reliance. Recently, we have had two veterinarians come out to discuss their jobs with us. One of them took ultrasounds of Frying Pan Park’s two pregnant pigs and one pregnant cow. Our members enjoyed seeing the babies and learning how veterinarians take ultrasounds on different types of animals. Another veterinarian talked to us about what it takes to own different breeds of animals. Our club had a lot of questions for her and she was very nice and answered them all.

Krazy for K9s 4-H Dog Training Club

Krazy for K9s 4-H Dog Training Club had a very busy training schedule this spring with twice weekly training meetings in basic obedience and agility foundation training at Frying Pan Farm Park.  Preparation for competitive obedience, rally, showmanship and agility continues with the help of instructors Dian Thomas and Anna-Rose Wolff.   Also, with the assistance of instructors Susan Brogan and Kathy Holshey, several club members are also preparing a group freestyle routine to be performed on Sunday, August 5th at the Fairfax County 4-H Fair.
In addition, Krazy for K9s members Arielle Ampeh and her dog Kaila and Kira Baugh and her dog Riley earned the American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Certificate and passed the Therapy Dog International Certification exam on Friday, June 29,th   in preparation for visits to local assisted living residences and other therapy work.  Also, 4-H volunteers Cheryl Cass and her dog Scout and Brenda Shaver and her dog Penny passed the CGC and TDI certification exams.  In addition, 4-H Cloverbud parent/leader Ioana Montel and her puppy Chaos earned the CGC certificate.  Special thanks to former 4-H parent Rosemary Miller who is a volunteer CGC and TDI evaluator for local 4-H dog clubs, and for the following 4-Hers who stewarded at the testing event:  Krazy for K9s members Ciara Sitko and Alina Ampeh; Cloverbuds Kalina Montel and Jon Anthony Montel; and adult leaders Dian Thomas, Sheila Baugh, Anna-Rose Wolff and Karen Ampeh.

Kingsley 4-H Club Ends Year with Planting

The Kingsley 4-H Club finished the year with a successful hatching of eight baby chicks in our new incubator, the planting of our garden, and participation in a variety of springtime crafts.

The embryology project was the most successful in three years; with eight surviving chickens, the Kingsley 4-Hers were able to fully participate in the project.  Club members made houses with curtains, wallpaper and room dividers for the new tenants, who seemed to enjoy the spaces. Club members also made their own chicks to take home.
After taking the chicks back to 4-H headquarters, club members turned their attention to gardening. Over the remaining days of club activities, members prepared the garden beds and planted everything from tomatoes to herbs.

During the summer, Kingsley 4-Hers are looking forward to attending 4-H Camp and participating in the 4-H Fair in partnership with the Fairfax Club at the embryology display. Club members will be participating by helping to staff the exhibit and by providing chicks. The chicks will be hatched at the Kingsley Computer Clubhouse as part of their summer curriculum.

Mount Vernon Cloverbuds

The Mount Vernon Cloverbuds have been working hard this spring.  We are really embracing "learning by doing".  Each Cloverbud has been responsible for planning and conducting a meeting.  We have learned about soil, seeds, planting, and harvesting.  The kids decorated pots and planted seeds.  In addition, we have learned about sharing, rainbows, and "visited" Germany.  We also took our first field trip to one of our family's home and enjoyed a live blacksmith demonstration.  In July, we will be working on our projects for the fair in August as well as preparing for next year's activities.

Nutts 4 Mutts 4-H Dog Training Club

The Nutts 4 Mutts 4-H Dog Training Club meets twice a month at the Hollin Hall Senior Center, 1500 Shenandoah Road, Alexandria.  Members are learning about dog care and training through hands-on activities with their pets.  They are also completing project books and preparing to participate in the 4-H Fair this August.  The club thanks the Mount Vernon Dog Training Club for donating floor mats to our group.  The mats provide a non-slip surface for working with our dogs.  The club hosted a “Meet and Greet” in April to spread the word about our club to the community.  Contact Katrina at parshleys@earthlink.net for more information about this club.
